Fender Jaguar

Kinman Jaguar pickup with it's new Kinman one-piece Claw, as of 20-July-2017

The SurfJag is one of the most alive and juicy Jaguar pickup we make, it's so alive and juicy it outshines most non-noiseless single coils.   Archetype Non-Aged Fender sound delivers exceptional dynamic range and explosive thwack attack, excellent transparent piano mid tones and harmonic ring, outstanding twang, sweet cutting highs.

This Zero-Hum Jaguar* pickup for Surf is like our non-aged-sound Impersonator E56 Strat* pickup but because Jags have a shorter scale length the sound will be deeper, more throaty.  Think Dick Dale's dynamic surf classic Misirlou and you'll have a good idea of how this pickup sounds.    Also our's has staggered magnets which give you nicely balanced string output levels which we know you are gonna dig.

Our Mod-Jag serves very well as a compatible bridge pickups which customers say  is perfect for the bridge position because it soothes the sharpness and ice-pick and it balances better with the neck Surf-Jag tonally and loudness-wise.  Position 2 produces a pronounced c-luck sound, like 'that' Tele sound when both are on together.  Available in the Mixed Sets order form.

COVERS news Dec-22:  We now have our own Jaguar covers that do not require modifying the opening in the pickguard.  Available in White, Aged White, Parchment, Gibson Cream and Black.  We can now supply 52.5mm, 51mm and 49.5mm magnet spreads in any of 5 colors to suit any type of bridge (wide vintage or modern narrow such as Mastery, Tune-O-Matic and so on)

Magnum Opus sets now available in the Mixed Sets order form.  The Magnum Opus versions, like our Magnums for Stratocaster, incorporate our TCS Inhibiting technology and have a bit extra oomph and presence.  There is no doubt these are the finest Jaguar pickups available.

Recommended particularly for low and medium gain applications where you need the archetype Fender* sound, tone & feel.  Its also terrific for sounds with gain and you will be astonished at the absolute silence of Zero-Hum.

IMPORTANT info for you Jaguars short scale results in lower string tension which produces more string crash and pitch warble however Kinmans proprietary Alnico-K** low strength magnets reduce string crash and buzz as well as allow longer sustain and minimize pitch warble.

We now include 2 of our special made improved replica mounting screws.

This photo highlights our exceptional strings-over-magnets alignment when narrow bridge such as Mastery is fitted.  Same for regular Fender bridges thanks to Kinman's 3 different magnet spreads.

Kinman pickups for Jaguar are direct replacements and no modification to the guitar is required.

Some people will call these noiseless Jaguar pickups but Kinman prefers to describe them correctly as Zero-Hum Jaguar pickups.  That's because there are 2 types of noise, Hum which is cancelled in the pickup and Buzz which can only be minimized by shielding the wiring cavities (refer to >Technical >Perfect Guitar >Shielding for newer guitars

** Alnico-K is a unique proprietary rod magnet developed by Kinman in 1985.  It is Alnico-5 but has 40% less string pull than Alnico-5 so sustain is longer and there is much less clatter from string crash and no Strat-itis string warble.

* Fender, Strat, Jaguar and Jag are registered Trade Marks of Fender Musical Instrument Corp, Inc.  Kinman is not associated with FMIC but they kindly permit us to refer to their Trade Marks to describe our products.

Number of parts in this pickup: 31
Number of parts in regular single coil: 11
Number of parts in other brand noiseless: There are no other noiseless Jaguar pickups with Alnico rod magnets.  Kinman is the only one and that makes it the coolest Jaguar pickup available.

Laser engraved nomenclature so you can't forget.

Pickup adjustment

As with all Kinman Gen-2 pickups these are sensitive to height adjustment.  A good starting point, so the neck and bridge pickups balance, is with the two E strings fretted at the 15th fret, adjusted as follows ... and then experiment with lower heights too.

  •  bridge pickup so the string-to-magnet gap is 1.25mm for both E strings
  •  neck pickup so the string-to-magnet gap is 1.5mm for both E strings

Connection means available

  • Bare wires for soldering.
  • Kinman connectors for plugging into any Kinman Goodbye-Soldering Harness.  We do not make harness for Jaguar.

Hook-up wires

  • 3 single wires is standard.  Allows for phase reversing and series connection.  Cut generously longer than necessary for the 2 pickup positions.
  • Single non-shielded wires require shielding in the cavities that carry wiring to prevent electrical buzz.  See >Technical >Perfect Guitar >Shielding for newer guitars
  • We now use Fenders color codes.

Output Polarity:

  • in-phase with all other Kinman pickups (compatible)
  • in-phase with Gibson and Copy humbuckers (compatible)
  • opposite phase to Fender Strat etc (requires phase reversal of either pickup)

Pot & Capacitor values

  • Recommended 250k Ohm Volume pot (measured).  Thinner sound with 500k or 1Meg for volume & Tone.
  • It's easy to change the pot in the main circuit, it's difficult to find the smaller one in the separate upper circuit for the neck pickup.
  • Tone pot is usually the same value as the volume.  A little more top end brightness from 500k, 1meg or a No-Load.
  • Normal tone cap value of 0.022μF in 63 ~ 100 volt.  Smaller values lessen the severity of Treble cut.

Magnet spreads (E-1st ~ E-6th) see photo bottom of the Info TAB

  • 52.5mm that suits Fender USA, Japanese.
  • 51mm that suits some Squire, SE Asian and Mexican Jags.
  • 49.5mm neck pickup with Mastery Bridge.
  • Indicate the bridge saddle spread in the Ordering Process so we know which one you need.

Magnet Staggers

  • Normal improved Stagger to suit 7 ~ 14 inch uniform radius fretboards including USA Custom Guitar Compound 7-1/4" ~ 9-1/2
  • Flat Stagger for specific compound radius fretboards (Warmoth 10 ~ 16 inch and Post 2010 Fender Deluxe 9 ~ 14")
  • Option to specify the magnet stagger in our 'After-Order Additional Questions' email we send you.

Mounting hardware included

  • 2 of our specially made improved mounting screws.
  • 2 Silicon Rubber tube springs are included.
  • Kinman one one-piece special non-magnetic Claw that is fixed to the pickup.

Covers

  • Black and Cream for MiA and MiJ that have 55mm bridge saddle spread and White & Ivory for Squires that have 52mm saddle spread.
  • With and without the Kinman logo.

We highly recommend consulting the Install Guide in the Technical section even if you think you know it all.  Kinmans' require specialized knowledge and sometimes there is updated info.

We also highly recommend consulting the Adjust & Set-up page also in the Technical section so you get the best out of your Kinman pickups.

Sorry, No YouTube demo for this pickup.

The Surf-Jag pickups are installed and we are up and running, the Jag sounds great with this Surf-Jag set.

Your new Kinman pickup covers are quality and the narrow neck pole spacing gives perfect string alignment with the 52mm Staytrem bridge (also Mastery bridges).  Thanks for looking after me.  CA

ED:  there is quite a story behind this Report Card from Chris Aungier.  Read on ...

I fitted Kinman Jaguar Surf pickups in my Jaguar just over a year ago. All went well and I am pleased with the results.

Anyway, a few weeks ago the neck pickup went dead. I disconnected the wiring and measured the pickup resistance as zero. l messaged Kinman and told them about the problem and asked what was needed to get a replacement. I was surprised to get a same day answer saying that they would replace the pickup free of charge under warranty. They also said this was an extremely rare occurrence.

Then I was again surprised when Kinman told me since my original order was placed, when they only supplied 51mm pole spacing pickups available (because the only covers available at the time were generic Korean covers but recently they had invested in expensive injection molds and now made their own high quality Jaguar pickup covers) and so now they offer 3 different pole spacings to give perfect string-over-magnets alignments, according to the bridge spacing (Narrow or Wide).  Kinman asked if I would like a 49.5mm pole spaced replacement neck pickup as this was the best option for my Staytrem bridge I immediately replied "YES please".

Kinman then responded that their new range of Jaguar pickup cover colours were improved and would likely not match the existing bridge pickup cover that I have, and so they would also supply free of charge a matching 51.5mm bridge pickup cover to ensure a perfect colour match.

I thought it was worth posting this as it does confirm that Kinman is a high quality company designing and making great pickups with great backup service. These are expensive and great pickups, so I hope this will set minds at rest when considering purchasing Kinman noiseless Jaguar pickups.  I highly recommend Kinman Jaguar pickups.

I bough your Magnum Opus Surf-Jag Punk-Jag set and I am astonished at the difference between the Johnny Marr stock pickups and the Kinmans!!  the low E rings like a piano! so much more overtones and detail!!

I used a nickel (American coin) to start with the height on both pickups, the result was it increased bass in the Punk bridge!  had to lower the neck a little from that point and Wa la! it sounds like a beast!  I played some surf tunes with it and can't believe how (better than authentic) it sounds! Thank you Kinman!!  this Jag is now a beast!   Richard
