47.5mm Pole Spread that provides perfect string-over-pole alignment at the neck.
Only Kinman makes this because our CLC Technology makes up for what is lost
when poles are spaced close together.

Here are two more fine and very different humbuckers added to Kinman's House of Humbuckers.

Big Little Terror with super duper crunch and wonderful depth-of-field (3D) performance.  Available now!

We have finally entered the HOT humbucker arena, but, as to be expected from Kinman, our's have some surprising improvements courtesy of the radically different engineering inside.  Our Big Little Mini's are something of a Jeckle and Hyde kind of pickup, the clean aspect is surprisingly beautiful with abundant piano mid-tones and sweet n pretty trebles but all hell breaks loose when the volume is rolled up.

2 rows of 6 domed "headless" pole screws made especially for us out of tougher steel.  This is a real fun full-sized monster if you love super crunch & growl.  Hell, it sounds gooood, so dynamic, and with it's rapid attack and impressive dynamic range it feels great too without Fx devices and like a Ferrari it just wants to get up and go ... it's so exciting.  All strings, top and bottom, break into full-on crunch so easily, without Fx devices, amazing ... that's what it is.  Know what you're thinking, the plain strings have a ragged spikey sound like ceramic magnets produce, right?  Wrong!!! they are sweet as ... but have all the cuting glass you'd ever want plus super dynamic response and long natural sustain.  Puts other (crude) hot humbuckers to shame, even the original super distortion that started it all.  You just gotta get this amazing humbucker into your guitar.

For a pickup so capable of sonic mayhem it sure sounds pretty darn agreeable.

  1. We don't use ceramic magnets because ...
    • a) being non-metallic they don't contribute inductance and so the sound of the plain strings is thin and gnarly.
    • b) ceramic magnets are excessively powerful and that causes unpleasant frequency warbling of the strings, and....
    • c) sustain is shortened due the magnetic string damping.
  2. Instead of excessively strong magnets, we gather all the wasted magnetism from our three conventional Alnico-5 bar magnets and focus it into the coil space where it produces 50% more voltage from a given coil.  It's called efficiency.
  3. We get all the best sounds and brutal power from our coils and guided magnetic field.  No need to use bothersome ceramic magnets.
  4. Our coils behave differently compared to ordinary humbuckers because of our innovative magnetic device.  Gone are the upper midrange spikes and gone too is the 'mud' of the low E string.  All strings sound highly agreeable despite the brutal output they produce.  The low wounds have improved depth and clarity and the plains have a new kind of sweet cut.
  5. The two coils have radical geometry and are wound radically (30%) different which is partly the reason for the excellent sounds, BUT .... despite unbalanced coils there is absolute Zero-Hum
  6. Clean tones are surprisingly beautiful and come to the fore with the volume rolled back.
  7. Gain and distortion sounds are exemplary, probably better than anything you've ever heard before because the tone still shines through the wall of sound.  Absolutely no mud!

Big Little Ripper

With super bell cleans and wonderful depth-of-field (3D) performance.

Like our Little Ripper Mini-bucker the Big Little Ripper really rips when you want it to, but with it's bright, chirpy bell-like sound it's mighty pretty down at low clean volumes.  This is one dynamic and versatile humbucker with a single row of headless poles screws.

Both models are available in a wide variety of covers (Durable Black, buffed Nickel-Silver, closed-top and our unique 240 open-top with choice of 8 Pearloid colors).  Check them all out in the Order Channel by clicking the big Blue BUY button bottom and top of this page.

Zero-Hum, even under maximum gain ..... and zero microphonic squeal.

Our pickups are over engineered and designed carefully so that wax potting has no detrimental effect on sound.  All Kinman's are wax potted and you have the freedom to utterly saturated their sound in distortion without a hint of microphonic feedback.

Our covers are made of Nickel-Silver so there is no degradation of tonal nuances.

Pole spreads
  • 53mm bridge pickups with vintage Stratocaster bridge
  • 50mm bridge pickup for all other bridges -and- neck pickup with vintage Stratocaster bridge
  • 47.5mm neck pickup with all other bridges.  Has our exclusive CLCT technology that restores the performance that is lost when poles are spaced closer together.

Mounting hardware (included)

  • Two 3-48 UNC mounting screws.  Phillips drive in a domed head.
  • Silicon rubber tube springs.

Optional mounting hardware

  • Three screw mounting for precise control over tilt and slant.   8mm between the two screws on the bass side.

Hook-up wires

  • Robust single wires for soldering, requires effective shielding in wiring tunnels to prevent electrical buzz
  • More than 3 single wires for multi-sound versions
  • 2 or 3 conductor shielded cable to facilitate phase reversing of non-splitting versions.  Wiring tunnel shielding not required
  • All the above with or without Kinman Harness Plugs

Connection means

  • for soldering
  • Plug for Kinman Goodbye Soldering harness

Cover options

  • Hand buffed Nickel-Silver.  Best sonic performance and immunity to feedback screech.  Suitable for relicing and deliberate aging
    • Will lose it's mirror-like polish naturally in a few months unless you maintain it with occasional application of clear liquid guitar polish
  • Durable Black.  Low maintenance, easy to keep clean and extremely resistant to scratching.
  • With and without Kinman logo
  • Is suitable for standard humbucker mounting rings

Pot & Capacitor values

  • Best with 500k Ohm volume pot, but almost as good with 250k.
  • Tone pot is usually the same value as the volume but for a little more top end brightness can be 1meg or No-Load.
  • Stock pots can actually measure as low as 350k.  Pots in our Goodbye-Soldering Harness are guaranteed to measure no less that 500k.
  • Normal tone cap value of 0.022uF, 63 ~ 100 volt Polyester.  Smaller uF value lessen the severity of Treble cut, higher values increase it.
    • The voltage rating of Caps is not important but 63 ~ 100 volt have thicker lead wires that are easy to work with.

Output Polarity:

  • in-phase with all other Kinman pickups
  • in-phase with Gibson and Copy humbuckers
  • opposite phase to Fender Strat
  • optional 3 wire Phase reversible

We highly recommend consulting the Install Guide in the Technical section even if you think you know it all.  Kinmans' require specialized knowledge and sometimes there is updated info.  There is also a handy wiring diagram available with extra functionality switching options.

We also highly recommend consulting the Adjust & Set-up page in the Technical section so you get the best out of your Kinman pickups.

Impressive High-Octane demo including Coil Splitting.

The Jangle control on your Converge-3 is a truly stellar feature! Brilliant tonal spectrum. And that's in addition to the already outstanding p-ups!!

Cheers, Erich

ED: thanks Erich, for confirming our thoughts that the Jangle control is a useful control which increases the versatility of an already highly versatile humbucker.  Glad to hear also that you believe it's overall an outstanding pickup.

Hi Joe  (and Chris),

It's finished ! And it sounds magnificent !!  (and looks great too)

The whole project was very much a leap of faith, both in my installation ability and in the sound of the pickups, because I really only bought them based on your reputation. But I LOVE the sound ! The clarity and punch is just astounding, and the range of sounds is just what I was looking for. I particularly love the split sound on the neck pickup, which outdoes my strat, but every sound is wonderful, and I'm finding more by playing with the tone knob - which on all of my other guitars only added mud unless left on 10. I guess I will continue to try tweaking a little after I get used to them, to see if I can balance them any more.

I think your pickups are one of my best ever purchases. Thanks so much for a wonderful product and thanks so much for your help during the process.

Best wishes, Simon

I forgot to mention that I used the guitar for a rehearsal last night, and everyone said how much better my sound was  :-)

Anyway, I have to go play now....

ED: Simon bought a pair of Converge-3, the neck one has Fender-like split single coil sound and the bridge has P90-like split coil single sound and both are noiseless (Zero-Hum).  The neck pickup has our exclusive new 47-5mm pole spread and doesn't it align with the strings really well !!!

Thanks heaps for your glowing Report Card Simon, and for your confidence in our ability to deliver what we claim.  After 4 years of developing the Converge multi-sound humbucker it is indeed very gratifying to hear how pleased you are with your new multi-sound Kinman's.  It makes all the midnight oil and our long hard and often frustrating work all worth while to read your report.  And thanks for the photo of your Variax too, looks cool with those 'Durable Black' covers and the 3 point mounting.

Converge HSH, looks amazing.  frigging almost equal sound level between Hum and single is amazing.  We think this converge-3 is better than the HSS in the Lukather split single coil by itself. Bridge is full enough to feel good but thin enough to sound like a strat with hardtail, it's punchy and clear, killer strat / humbucker tones

merry christmas guys !!!!!  Glenn

ED: Glenn bought one of our pre-release Converge-3 and installed it on his MusicMan Lukather.

I had half an hour on my hands today, so I adjusted the pickup heights to suit and tried the jangle control (genius). Didn't take long at all to decide on the sound I wanted from each pup. I have to say, yesterday's enthusiasm has actually increased. These pickups are amazing. Cleans are wonderful, even on the bridge pickup, with no hint of harshness.

I have three excellent drive pedals from ThorpyFX and I had a quick blast with each of them. On higher gain settings, the previous Gibson bridge pup quickly became harsh (and frankly unpleasant). Nothing like that with the Converge-3. My Les Paul is now addictive in a way that it never was before. If I didn't have to put my son to bed soon - and actually keep quiet enough for him to sleep - I reckon I'd be playing all night!
