Mustang

The guitar that's waiting for better pickups .......

This is the better pickup

24-August-2022:  The special new design v2 models are now available, these are not rebadged Strat pickups.

Fender Mustangs respond very well to pickup upgrade because the original pickups are of student quality and do not let the guitar achieve it's full sonic potential.  Not only that but the magnets (especially in Japanese models) do not align with the strings so the volume of some strings do not balance with other strings.

You can now enjoy radically improved sonic performance by fitting Kinman pickups that provide excellent string-over-magnet alignment for both pickups so you get perfect string volume balance.  Japanese Mustangs have bridge saddle spread of 52mm while American Mustangs have 55mm saddle spread.  Indicate which bridge you have in the ORDER CHANNEL.

Kinman Mustang pickups also have other special features for the Mustang that no other pickup can give you, eg grounded magnets to prevent noise when the magnets are touched, especially desirable for switched reverse phase (or series mode) provided by Mustang switching.  Custom magnet spreads that align with the strings for excellent string loudness balance.  3 Conductor shielded hook-up cables.

We also show you how to rewire the two slide switches to perform more useful functions.  The original switches provide either, or both pickups in phase and (honky) out of phase.  Rewire with Kinman's custom Mustang wirogram and you can have Neck and Bridge in series that provides a volume boost and get a P90-like crunch as well as Neck and Bridge in parallel, or each pickup individually.  All positions are noiseless (Zero-Hum).  This Custom wirogram is in the Install Guide section.

Available in two models

  • Grunge-tang v2
  • Punk-tang v2

Japanese (and perhaps American) Mustangs probably need the cavity floors at 16.5mm deep deepened to 20mm, the same as the other cavities.  This allows plenty of height adjustment range.

Some people will call these noiseless Mustang pickups but Kinman prefers to describe them correctly as Zero-Hum Mustang pickups.  That's because there are 2 types of noise, Hum which is cancelled in the pickup and Buzz which can only be minimized by shielding the wiring cavities (refer to >Technical >Perfect Guitar >Shielding for newer guitars

Technical & Application info:

Kinman pickups for Mustangs are direct replacements and no modification to the guitar is required.

Number of parts in this pickup: 31
Number of parts in
regular single coil: 11
Number of parts in other
brand noiseless: There are no other noiseless Mustang pickups with Alnico rod magnets.  Kinman is the only one and that makes it the coolest Mustang pickup available.

Connection means available

  • Bare wires for soldering.

Hook-up wires

  • 3 conductors are standard.  Cut precisely for the 2 stock Mustang positions (100mm).
  • Custom lengths by request with Order.

Output Polarity:

  • in-phase with all other Kinman pickups
  • in-phase with Gibson and Copy humbuckers
  • opposite phase to Fender Strat etc

Special features:

  • we ground the magnets to prevent noise when the magnets are touched
  • especially desirable when switched in series or reverse phase modes.

Pot & Capacitor values

  • Best with 250k Ohm (measured), brighter and less punchy with 500k volume pot.
  • Tone pot is usually the same value as the volume but for a little more top end brightness can be 500k, 1meg or a No-Load.
  • Normal tone cap value of 0.022uF in 63 ~ 100 volt.  Smaller value lessens the severity of Treble cut.

Magnet spread (E-1st ~ E-6th) for perfect string-over-magnet alignment.

  • Neck - Narrow 49.5mm.
  • Bridge - Standard 52.5mm (American models) & Intermediate 51mm for models that have a narrow 52mm bridge.

Magnet stagger:

  • Improved magnet array to suit any fretboard radius.

Pickup cavity:

  • Japanese (and perhaps American) Mustangs probably need the cavity floors at 16.5mm deep deepened to 20mm, the same as the other cavities.  This allows plenty of height adjustment range.

Mounting hardware included

  • 2 Pan head mounting screws.
  • 2 Silicon Rubber tube springs.

Covers - included

  • Black Standard Kinman cover without height extender bushings.
  • Also available in White and Aged White.
  • With and without Kinman logo.
